US and China Buy Two Months
US and China Buy Two Months — As we covered in Friday’s feature, Xi Jinping's first state visit since 2023 produced a two-month extension of the US-China trade truce, pushing the deadline to Jan. 10, 2027, per Treasury's Bessent. Xi struck a conciliatory tone and backed more flights and two-way trade. Importers hoping for a full year got less certainty, though current tariff rates hold through 2026. Behind the calm, Trump's team is weighing new 7.5% tariffs on China over overcapacity, delayed until after the meeting and maybe past the midterms.
Why It Matters: A two-month patch keeps the supply chain steady in the near term but leaves every long-term bet exposed. Companies planning 2027 sourcing, capex, or China exposure still can't price the risk. For investors and founders with hardware supply chains, the takeaway is that stability is rented, not owned, and the overcapacity tariff threat is a live wildcard that could reprice costs early next year.
A High Bar for Friday's Jobs Report
A High Bar for Friday's Jobs Report — After August blew past estimates at 162K versus 53K expected, economists see 100K jobs added in Friday's September report, with PCE inflation landing Wednesday. Forecasts split wide. BNP Paribas sees 90K and stays upbeat on the labor market, while Bank of America models just 60K, calling it payback from August's favorable seasonals. As the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, PCE feeds directly into whether the FOMC hikes again in 2026.
Why It Matters: This is a rare setup where strong jobs data raises the odds of a rate hike, not a cut, because the Fed has room to keep fighting inflation. Higher-for-longer rates lift the cost of the debt funding the AI build-out and squeeze late-stage valuations. For real estate, another leg up in borrowing costs hits deals penciled on cuts arriving. The wide forecast spread means Friday could swing sentiment hard in either direction.
