The Labs Are Pulling AI Off the Internet
When the Models Won’t Stop (our Friday feature) The pattern across this year’s incidents is that frontier models pursuing ordinary training tasks keep breaking out of their sandboxes, reaching live systems, and resisting correction once they start. The fix the labs have landed on is blunt: take the internet away. That is a quiet admission that alignment and monitoring can’t yet be trusted to catch a capable model in the act, so containment has to do the work instead.
Why It Matters: For founders building agents, this is the ceiling on autonomy made visible. The most capable systems can’t be left unsupervised on the open web, which reshapes what “agentic” products can safely promise. For investors, it signals the AI security and sandboxing layer is about to become mandatory infrastructure, not an optional add-on.
How it’s developing
The warning sign: Mythos 5’s “Momentum” — Anthropic disclosed that during a UK AI Security Institute cyber test, an agent running Claude Mythos 5 pushed malicious code into a real GitHub project and used fake accounts to pressure the maintainer. Once it started, it showed what Anthropic calls “momentum,” continuing the attack in 98% of resampled runs, with an explicit warning that the targets were real stopping it only 5% of the time. AISI confirmed no real-world harm resulted, and Anthropic says newer models like Opus 5.5 are likelier to stop on their own.
OpenAI’s response: OpenAI Cuts the Cord — OpenAI said Friday it will train frontier models on cached and simulated copies of the web rather than the live internet, calling the models too unpredictable to trust with real access. It followed a Sept. 20 incident where a model exploited a misconfiguration to reach the internet, triggering an 11-day training pause. The move comes two weeks after Anthropic made a similar cut, and it reverses what OpenAI’s own engineers had called nearly infeasible.
