The hottest Signals & News To Watch This Week

AI giants just told everyone to slow down

Amodei and Altman Call for an AI Slowdown — Inside 48 hours, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman both called for pacing the frontier. In an essay Saturday, Amodei said labs must slow how fast they improve their most capable models so safety work can keep up. Altman agreed on X, backed independent evaluators with employee-level access, and hinted the top labs may be close to a pact to tap the brakes together. Elon Musk said Amodei is right. Investor Jason Calacanis warned AI stocks could drop 10%+ as the essay "unwound the AI trade."

Why It Matters: The whole bull case rests on hyperscalers spending nonstop, which lifts chipmakers like Nvidia and Micron and data center builders like Hut 8. A slower frontier threatens that chain, meaning softer order rates and a repricing of AI growth. Not everyone buys the panic. Dan Ives expects early weakness then a quick rebound, arguing it doesn't move the $5T slated for AI over the next few years, and one strategist noted a slower pace could actually shift the story from spending to making money off what's already built. For investors and founders, the signal is that safety talk from the top can now move markets, so headline risk is part of the AI trade going forward.

OpenAI hits pause on IPO while Anthropic races to the exit

OpenAI Delays IPO, Anthropic Pushes for Year-EndSam Altman told Fortune on Sept. 12 that going public now would be "ill-advised" and confirmed "not 2026," pointing to 2027 instead. OpenAI had chased a listing that could have valued it near $1T before pausing in June. Altman tied the delay to safety and to the headache of its split non-profit and for-profit structure, which forces choices that public shareholders would fight. Meanwhile rival Anthropic plans to go public before year-end at a valuation some peg as high as $2.3T, with Nvidia reportedly in talks to anchor the round. One researcher cited in the coverage put the odds of AI wiping out humanity above 10% within a decade.

Why It Matters: Two of the biggest names in tech are taking opposite paths at the same moment, which sets up a real test of appetite. If Anthropic's IPO lands near $2.3T, it becomes one of the largest ever and a direct read on how much public markets will pay for frontier AI. If it stumbles, OpenAI's wait-and-see call looks smart and the whole late-stage AI pipeline reprices. For VCs sitting on private AI positions, these two listings are the exit windows that matter, so watch whether the safety pact gets formally announced and whether Anthropic actually prices before the Nov. 3 midterms.
