TOP SIGNAL ALERTS
The hottest Signals & News To Watch This Week
In case you missed it, our Friday editorial covered the emerging economic crisis.
US debt/GDP at 110% matching 1946 levels as entitlements/interest now consume 105% of federal receipts growing 7.5%/year against 4% revenue growth. Interest alone runs $1.4T annually — triple 2020 — against total debt past $40T. Treasury doubled bond buybacks this week. JPMorgan warned global food costs could climb 5% in early 2027 as Hormuz fertilizer shortage collides with strongest El Niño on record. China's CIPS alternative settlement system now spans 124 countries with volume growing from 96T yuan to 180T yuan since 2022 — payments that never touch a US correspondent bank. Gold passed Treasuries as world's largest reserve asset. ECB publicly described US AI sector as a bubble. Hedge funds now own 8.5% of Treasury market — larger than Japan, China or Saudi Arabia — mostly levered. Sovereign buyers replaced by leverage. Diesel +45%, jet fuel +56%, heating oil +71%, European gas ~doubled, sulfur +145%. 60% of surveyed investment professionals now expect a crisis. Gold up 100% in a year.
Why It Matters: This is not an Iran story. Iran was the trigger, not the cause. The architecture holding dollar dominance together — oil priced in dollars, dollars recycled into Treasuries, a navy guaranteeing oil moves — is fracturing simultaneously on three fronts and none of them are repairable with a ceasefire. The 1946 fix worked because war-torn creditors were captive with nowhere else to go. That captive audience no longer exists. CIPS gave sanctioned and non-aligned nations a working exit ramp in 2022 and it has been filling up ever since. Every asset freeze since has been free advertising for it. For tech investors and VCs: the ECB's bubble warning on US AI stocks is not idle commentary — European pension funds take allocation cues from their central bank, and Europe is a critical buyer of both US bonds AND US equities that fund the trade deficit. If European allocators rotate out, the feedback loop hits AI valuations directly. Mag 7 capex assumptions of $725B+ this year are predicated on cheap financing that requires foreign capital inflows to remain stable. Every scenario on the menu — buyback expansion, stablecoin debt financing, yield curve control, slow dollar debasement, gold revaluation — ends in the same place: real value of paper claims falls, hard assets hold. This is the macro frame inside which every AI investment decision in H2 2026 is being made whether portfolio managers acknowledge it or not.
