Did The System Just Break?
Private Credit Collapse, Energy Crisis Intensifies & Iran Targets Tech Giants
Tech Buzz Editorial Feature
BlackRock won't give investors their money back. Neither will Morgan Stanley, Cliffwater, Blue Owl, Apollo, or Blackstone. Loans marked at full value three months ago are now worthless. $5.7T in retirement funds can't get out.
Oil refineries across the Gulf are burning. The Strait of Hormuz is effectively closed. Lloyd's and seven major insurers walked away entirely. Western nations are discussing energy rationing and other measures.
Iran warned Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Palantir, IBM, Nvidia, and Oracle their data centers and offices are now military targets. They already hit AWS facilities in Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai.
Three systems breaking at once: finance, energy, digital infrastructure. 32 countries just authorized 400M barrels from strategic reserves, the largest emergency release ever. Iran could still escalate further and target the East-West pipeline.
The current reserves last four months. Rebuilding refineries takes years. The data centers are already hit.
Private Credit Locks the Exits
Morgan Stanley capped redemptions at 5% quarterly. Investors want 11% out. Cliffwater managing $33B faces 14% withdrawal requests, caps at 7%. BlackRock and Apollo valued loans at 100 cents, then marked them to zero the next quarter.
UBS forecasts 15% defaults, triple the 2008 peak. $5.7T exposed: $2.8T in 401(k)s, $700B public pensions, $1.5T corporate pensions. 34 million Americans can't exit.
JP Morgan marked down collateral and tightened lending. Labor weakens, borrowers default, funds can't pay banks, banks restrict credit, unemployment rises.
Energy Infrastructure Destroyed
The IEA coordinated 400M barrels from reserves across 32 countries. Deployment takes four months. Reserves are finite. This seems like a drop in the bucket as shortages already emerge in Asian nations.
The Strait of Hormuz handles 20% of global oil. What's destroyed: Ruwais refinery in Abu Dhabi (offline indefinitely), Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia, Port of Salalah in Oman, Bahrain's refinery, loading terminals, tankers, fertilizer carriers.
Lloyd's and seven insurance clubs stopped covering the region. No insurance means no financing, no ships, no trade. Naval escorts can't fix that. The USS Ford passed its eight-month deployment limit. The Navy is stretched across three theaters. U.S. Oil tankers were hit in the straits yesterday.
The Saudi East-West pipeline is the last major route, moving 5M barrels daily. If that's hit, oil goes to $200.
Oil spiked to $120, dropped to $87, now climbing back. Fertilizer is up 77%. Qatar supplies 20% of global LNG and already declared Force Majeure. Russian Urals crude trades at a $26.50 discount to Brent, around $56 total, $14 below budget needs. This is benefiting Russia’s budget more than anything right now.
Digital Infrastructure Under Fire
Iran has already hit AWS data centers in Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. The IRGC also listed Google, Microsoft, Palantir, IBM, Nvidia, Oracle as legitimate targets. Offices in Israeli cities and Gulf states are on the list.
Most Fortune 500 companies run on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. Payment systems, banking infrastructure, enterprise software all depend on infrastructure Iran is targeting.
Helium and Semiconductor Supply Chains Hit
Qatar produces 30% of global helium as an LNG byproduct. When LNG stops, helium disappears. No strategic reserve exists. It's lighter than air and escapes.
Helium is critical for semiconductor manufacturing, fiber optics, space systems, quantum computing and MRI machines. No helium means chip fabs halt, fiber production stops. That is not good news for the U.S. AI dominance battle.
Debt Meets Deflation
The SaaSpocalypse is also still continuing, already wiping out $1T in software value. Adobe's CEO is now leaving after 18 years at the helm and Atlassian cut 10% of staff.
Unemployment sits at 4.1%. Most people don't own homes or cars outright. Student loans are non-dischargeable. Car delinquencies are rising. How much higher can unemployment (and fuel prices for workers) go before defaults cascade?
Four Months Of Reserves
Strategic reserves last four months. Refineries need years to rebuild. $5.7T in retirement funds are trapped. Data centers are under attack. The AI Saas-pocalypse shows no signs of slowing down. The government spends 120% of revenue before discretionary items. The question is, what breaks when everything hits at once?
