China Gave Away Its Best AI. Watch Who Panicked
Tech Buzz Editorial
In one week, China did two things Silicon Valley spent years betting it couldn't. A startup called Moonshot put out an AI model, Kimi K3, that reportedly matches the best American systems, and handed it over for free. Days later, a state-backed company in Shanghai began mass-producing the machine that carves circuits onto the world's most advanced chips, a job that had belonged almost entirely to Dutch firm, ASML. Markets got the message fast. Nvidia fell nearly 5% on Monday, memory and chip stocks slid with it, and Apple quietly took back the title of most valuable company on Earth.
US AI Bets Look Shakier
A lot of money rides on one idea: that the best AI stays rare and pricey. Advanced chips are hard to make, so the firms that make them charge a premium. The labs that train the biggest models charge for access, sometimes $30 per million tokens. Both ends of that trade took a hit at once. When a Chinese lab gives away a model that holds its own against the paid ones, the pricing power of closed AI starts to leak. When China builds its own chip machines, the export limits Washington leans on lose some of their fear factor.
Kimi K3 isn't fully open, to be fair. Moonshot released the model's weights, the numbers it learned while training, and kept the training data and other parts private. Still, for a founder who wants a capable model running on their own servers, with no sensitive data leaving the building, free and private is a strong pitch.
The Alarm and Who Keeps Ringing It
There are real worries here. Open weights can be copied and altered by anyone, including people who want to build cyberattacks or worse, and the National Security Council has held briefings on whether Chinese models might hide backdoors or quietly scoop up data. Those questions deserve a straight answer. It's worth noticing who asks them loudest.
Last week, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta signed a letter urging regulators not to restrict open models. OpenAI and Anthropic didn't sign it. Match each company to how it earns and the pattern jumps out. Meta makes its money from ads, not from renting models. Nvidia sells chips to whoever is building, open or closed. The two that stayed off the letter are the two whose revenue depends on models staying locked up. As one industry executive told CNBC, "We're watching China sprint ahead in areas where regulatory uncertainty has frozen American innovation."
The security case can be genuine and convenient at once. But when the people warning you about a product also sell the alternative, a little doubt is healthy.
Squeezing Only Feeds It
The plainest sign the pressure is backfiring came from a stock exchange. CXMT, a memory chip maker in Hefei, went public in Shanghai and raised $8.6B. Shares jumped 470% on day one, valuing it near $49B. Every dollar investors put in is a dollar Beijing doesn't have to spend itself. The export controls were built to slow China's chip industry down. So far they've handed it a reason, and a market, to speed up.
The Other Side of the Trade
For investors, the real question is how sturdy the winning side looks up close. Nvidia is reportedly in talks to backstop $250B so OpenAI can lease computing power for a US data center. That's the kind of arrangement where the chip seller helps fund its own customer, and it makes people wonder whether the demand is solid or just running in a circle. On Monday, the cost to insure Nvidia's debt against default rose by the most on record. Earnings from Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta land this week, each expected to show even heavier AI spending. Any hint that the spending isn't paying off would fall hardest on the chipmakers.
Cheap and open has a habit of winning in the long run, the way free phone software once rolled over everything in its path. Betting against that has not gone well for the people who've tried.
