The Robots Want to Do Your Shopping. Let Them Do the Boring Part.

In the last week, TikTok launched an AI Shopping Assistant with one-click checkout inside its For You feed, and ChatGPT started letting users try on clothes with a selfie. They join Meta's Muse, Google's Gemini Spark, Amazon's Alexa for Shopping and a crop of retailers building their own agents on Anthropic's Claude. Meanwhile, Uber agreed to buy catering platform ezCater in a $2.3B cash deal. Every big name wants to be your personal shopper. The smart response is to hire them for the dull jobs and keep the fun ones for yourself.

Apps Line Up To Run Your Shopping

TikTok built its new tools with Salesforce, Shopify and Stripe, and it has the crowd to make them stick: 54M Americans say they bought something after watching a TikTok video. Muse behaves more like an assistant with errands to run. Ask for an item and it browses retail sites, shortlists options and preps the checkout. Walmart, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair and Best Buy have signed on as partners, and Mark Zuckerberg says Meta will take a small fee on transactions.

Not everyone is opening the door. Amazon blocked Muse from its site, citing its terms of service. Yet Amazon's own agent uses a feature called Buy for Me to complete checkouts on websites Amazon does not own. Agents for me, not for thee.

The Boring Stuff Is Where Agents Shine

"Replenishment, price comparison, returns, waiting for a price drop: nobody feels diminished because a machine did that," said Luca Cian, a professor at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.

That is exactly where today's tools shine. Alexa for Shopping can restock household essentials, track price drops, and add an item to your cart only if it hits a target price and you haven't bought it recently. It also shows a full year of price history, so you can tell whether that "deal" is real. Google lets you track an item and get notified when its price falls within your budget, and its AI can even phone local stores to check stock. ChatGPT's try on tool lets you see the jacket on yourself before it reaches your doorstep.

Give the Bot a Budget

The catch is that buying becomes almost too easy. The guardrails are getting better, though. Muse shows an "approval card" before every purchase and can pay through Link by Stripe, which creates a single use card so your real details stay hidden. Meta says Muse is the first AI agent covered by Link's purchase protections.

Startups like Snaplii go further. You load a set amount, say $50, into a separate wallet your agent spends from. "You wouldn't hand a new assistant your credit card on day one. You'd give them a budget," said Spencer Xu, founder and CEO of Snaplii.

Rules matter because agents are still experiencing teething problems. Early Instinct users say it texted them shopping lists they never requested, one including a $250.75 suitcase. Tanmaye Bhatia, AI lead at Primary Venture Partners, said the agent should have asked permission first. Sound advice for any shopper: switch on approvals and decide when your agent may make suggestions.

Shops Are Building Their Own AI Agents

Plenty of stores would rather not have an outside agent standing between them and their customers. Anthropic released a blueprint for shopping agents that live inside a retailer's own app or site, with payment staying at the retailer's checkout. Anthropic says retailers using these agents have seen carts grow by up to 35% and shoppers become 60% more likely to buy.

"Whoever owns the agent owns the relationship with the shopper, and every retailer knows it," Cian said. Stores are feeling the pressure: 72% of UK and US merchants say shoppers will adopt agent shopping faster than most merchants are ready for.

Large Group Food Ordering With AI

Ordering food for a whole office might be the ultimate chore, and Uber just bought the company that handles it. ezCater generated more than $2.5B in gross bookings over the past year, and its average orders top $400. The deal follows Uber's $14.8B agreement for Delivery Hero in July and should help it narrow the US gap with DoorDash. ezCater has also worked with Salesforce on AI ordering agents that draw on a company's order history to recommend restaurants and menus. Big orders, repeat buyers, tedious logistics: the kind of shopping an agent was born for.

The Verdict on AI Shopping So Far

Free helpers come with a business model attached. Meta plans to take a cut of Muse transactions, and Instinct has described a model where merchants pay it when it brings them a sale. So your shopper may earn more when you spend more. Instinct CEO Noah Shinn himself has said it "would be a very dangerous world" if his agent pushed people toward purchases they don't want.

Treat these tools like a sharp new assistant. Let them restock the dish soap, chase the price drop and order the team lunch. Keep the approval button on, give them a budget, and save the impulse buys for days you actually feel like shopping.

"Trust is the currency of commerce, and it is even more critical in the agentic era."

— Sherri Haymond, Executive VP and Global Head of Digital Commercialization, Mastercard
