Texas Becomes the Air Taxi Testing Ground

Texas green-lights eVTOL test flights, but the vertiports and chargers going in around them are what actually decide the timeline

Air taxis are flying real routes over Texas right now, not concept videos, not renderings. On Sept 10, Joby Aviation started demonstration flights across Dallas-Fort Worth, including direct routes into DFW International Airport, as part of the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. The same week, rival Archer Aviation announced a charging network that will stretch across North Texas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and rural communities. Two companies picked the same state at the same moment to prove they're ready. That's worth paying attention to.

The Vertiport infrastructure 

Everyone gets excited about the aircraft. But the harder problem is what happens the second it lands: where it charges, how passengers get into a car or a train, who manages that whole handoff without it turning into chaos.

That's why Archer is building 250 charging sites across major U.S. airports and metro areas over the next 10 years, in partnership with Beta Technologies and Macquarie Capital. And it's why Joby teamed up with Atoms, the smart city infrastructure company started by Travis Kalanick, to build vertiports in Florida, New York, and Texas. Picture something less like an airport terminal and more like a turbocharged bus stop, one spot where an aircraft, a self-driving shuttle, and a rideshare car all meet.

If cities actually build these hubs, air taxis stop being a novelty and start being a commute option. If they don't, all the flashy test flights in the world won't matter.

Why Texas?

Texas has three things air taxi companies want: open airspace, a fast growing population, and a state government happy to fast track approvals. Joby just opened a 45,000 square foot base at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport. Its test flights include roundtrips from Arlington and a stop at Toyota's corporate campus in Plano, which is not random. Toyota has put nearly $900M into Joby and builds parts of its powertrain. Car companies don't write checks that size for something they expect to stay a demo forever.

Archer, meanwhile, is mid-tour on a cross country flight from California through Texas to Florida, stacking up flight hours in front of regulators. Whoever generates the cleanest safety data first gets to help write the rules the whole industry has to follow after.

So when do you actually get a seat?

These flights aren't selling tickets yet. They're collecting the operational data the FAA needs before it can even write the safety rules for commercial passenger service. Realistically, the first paying rider in Texas is probably still a year or more away, and that number moves depending on how clean these test weeks go. One bad incident in a crowded airspace, one certification delay, and the whole timeline slides right.

Wall Street already has opinions about how confident to be. Joby's stock has dropped 56.2% over the past year, more than five times worse than the aerospace and defense sector's 11.3% decline. That gap between exciting demo flights and a battered stock price tells you something real: the flying part is ahead of the business part.

What to watch

Watch which cities actually approve vertiport construction, and which ones let the permits sit in a drawer. The plumbing for a new kind of commute is being laid down right now, quietly, in Texas skies and Texas city council chambers, long before most people will ever set foot in one of these aircraft. Whether it becomes part of your actual commute or just another transportation experiment that never left the runway depends on how well these companies go at building the boring ground infrastructure to support them.
