The US Says Stockpile Food. It Still Has No Plan For Its $720M Fight Hunger Fund.

Governments issue food preparedness advice, the Pentagon wants its bases to last 90 days alone. The money meant to fight hunger is sitting still. What is moving is ag-tech, payment rails, private credit, and charity innovation.

Dan Bongino, a former Trump FBI appointee, has warned Americans to take heed of recent alerts from other governments, including the UK and Japan, to stockpile essentials amid threats of cyberattacks and rising geopolitical instability. Bongino urged people to have 30 days of food and water at the ready.

Open Ready.gov and the US government tells you to keep enough food and water in the house "to last for several days." Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Japan, Canada, Mexico and the Netherlands say some version of the same. Germany says 10 days. The Pentagon wants its own bases able to run 90 days with no civilian supply at all.

That advice is not a positive sign for the stability of the food system. However, the US has $720M set aside to fight global hunger with no published plan for spending it yet, months past its due date.

The Trouble Starts Upstream

War, fuel and fertilizer supply are doing the damage. JPMorgan's report, titled "Food Security Is National Security," expects global food inflation to climb from 2.8% in the first half of 2026 to around 5% a year later, and points out there is no strategic reserve for fertilizer the way there is for oil. The Strait of Hormuz is a chokepoint for both. If the fighting starts again, the pain lands less on this harvest than on the next two, because fertilizer you could not buy in one season sets the price in the one after.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's FORTRESS plan, announced Sept 30, puts major US bases on portable nuclear reactors and their own grids for 90 days. "We don't want to rely on standard civilian municipal infrastructure to run our national defense," Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told Fox News.

Money With No Map And A Clock On It

Congress put $720M into Feed the Future for fiscal 2026. The five-year strategy telling the government how to spend it was due in July and has not appeared. The money dies on Sept 30, 2027. USAID, which ran the program, was shut down on July 1, 2025, and all but one of its 17 Innovation Labs were cancelled.

The need did not pause for the paperwork. 645M people face hunger worldwide and 2.1B live with moderate or severe food insecurity. 47M Americans are in food-insecure households, and the New York Fed found 19.7% of US households under $50K short of food or skipping meals for their kids in early 2026, up from 6.7% in mid-2020.

The Big Money Went To The Checkout

AgFunder counts $16.2B of global agrifoodtech funding last year. Flat, with deal count down 12% and total funding down 70% from the 2021 peak. Then DoorDash agreed this week to buy Instacart for $17B. One company paid more for a grocery delivery app than every venture investor on earth put into growing and making food in twelve months.

The Crypto Food Charities That Work

The least exciting use of this technology is the one delivering. The World Food Programme's Building Blocks network has moved $555M in cash transfers, supports 4M people a month and saved $3.5M in bank fees. UNDP pilots backed by the Circle Foundation cut distribution costs in Syria from 10% to 2%.

Credit is going the same way. Debt is now 18.2% of all agrifood funding, its biggest share in a decade. Birch Hill, started by Goldman Sachs and BlackRock alumni, raised $4M led by Multicoin Capital to package US farm, apartment and energy loans onchain.

EAT Pays People To Show Up

EAT's pitch deck opens on the line that explains the design. Hunger is every day. Goodwill comes in bursts. A paid loop does not.

So EAT built one to support its core function as a crypto token that feeds charities via trading revenues, with over 73,000 meals already funded via registered food charity partners.

Eat also now works as a challenges app. A creator takes a challenge that puts hunger on camera, clippers cut the video and earn $1 per 1,000 verified views, and the cash lands on an EAT Card, a Visa debit card live on the App Store and Google Play. Trading fees come back round and buy more food, at $1 for five meals. $1M at that rate buys 1B impressions aimed at hunger, and Goldman Sachs Research reckons the creator economy could hit $480B by 2027.

As of October, 284 creators had signed up carrying 129M self-reported followers, with over 300 applicants now confirmed. The first fund video came from Danah Kim in Seattle, who has 2,479 followers and spent a week sharing meals with strangers downtown. "Beyond the food, it was the conversations, stories, and connections with people I'd never met before that TRULY stayed with me," she wrote. Applications close this saturday at 11:59pm PT.

EAT has applied for the 2026 FoodTech 500, a list that asks whether a model pays for itself.

Where This Leaves Food in 2027

The part of the food system that feeds people who can pay has never worked better. The part that feeds people who cannot, is waiting on a document that was due in July. The upstream supply is cheap and starved due to war and inefficiency, debt is where the volume went, and the gap between a dollar and a mouth is the bit technology turns out to be good at closing.
