Apple’s AI Features and Today’s iPad Event
Rumors of upcoming Apple AI tools are rife ahead of today’s Apple iPad 2024 event. The big AI announcements like a Siri upgrade, on-device AI summarization, and an AI app store, aren’t expected until the iOS18 update at June’s WWDC event, but we may yet get some surprises today. Apple and its investors will be hoping so after iPhone sales fell 10.5% in Q1.
iPad Event
The rumor mill suggests today’s event will likely reveal:
– A new M4 chip to compete with Microsoft’s new ARM chips;;
– A new iPad Pro with an OLED display;
– A new keyboard case; and
– An Apple Pencil Pro with haptic feedback.
When Apple AI?
Speaking of chips, a MacRumors report today says Apple is building custom AI servers with its M2 Ultra chip and plans to use the M4 chip by late 2025. Also, AppleInsider broke that Apple’s iOS18 will include AI tools to summarize texts and Safari web pages on-device using the Ajax model. Spotlight Search, and Siri are also said to be first in line for AI upgrades.
While Ajax can generate basic offline responses, more advanced replies or summaries could require cloud-based processing. This is where another reliable rumor comes in, suggesting Apple is working with Google to license its Gemini LLM for iPhone to replace the default Google Search.
AppleInsider even suggests Apple and Google could be collaborating on a new App Store for AI apps & experiences. This would certainly be one way for the two companies to head off the threat of OpenAI and Microsoft.
