Apple Duo vs Huawei Foldable, Astra vs DeepSeek

The iPhone Duo arrives, but the China price gap is reshaping phones and AI.

Apple's first foldable is finally here. The iPhone Duo opens into a 7.6 inch screen with a 5.4 inch cover display, and its hinge, built from grade 5 aluminum and over 100 custom parts, hides the crease better than any foldable made so far. It runs the new A20 Pro chip, packs a 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide camera, and claims up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen. It skips Face ID for Touch ID, drops the telephoto lens, and starts at $1,999, climbing to $3,199 fully loaded. Preorders open October 16, shipping October 23.

The Duo shared the stage with a full lineup. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max got variable-aperture 48MP cameras and start at $1,199 and $1,299, each $100 above last year. The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 added "Audio Intelligence" that can rewind the last 15 seconds of a conversation, starting at $399 and $499. The AirPods 5 land at $129 with 50% better noise cancellation. Apple also rebuilt its Health app around a "Health Age" score. It is a lot of hardware. 

China Got There First, And Cheaper

Huawei and Xiaomi both dropped flagship foldables this Monday before Apple's event. Huawei's Mate XT2 folds twice into a tablet and starts near $2,980. Xiaomi's 18 Fold weighs under 8 ounces, measures under a quarter inch thick when open, and starts around $1,540, almost $900 below the Duo. Huawei already controls 68% of foldable shipments in China, and led the whole Chinese phone market last quarter at 22.6%, ahead of Apple's 18.1%.

Here is the part that should make investors sit up. Huawei's foldable runs on its own Kirin 9050 Pro, a chip built specifically to work around US export controls on advanced chipmaking gear. Executive Richard Yu said memory costs alone made pricing brutal this year. A company that was supposed to be boxed in just undercut the most valuable company on earth. That gap between what the rules intended and what actually shipped is large.

Same Battle Plays Out in AI with Asta vs Deepseek V4

This pattern is not confined to mobiles. It also showed up in AI this week.

OpenAI's new model, Astra, launched last week to demand so heavy the company just paused new signups for its $200 per month Pro plan just to keep servers upright. That is a real demand signal, the kind founders dream about. Nobody fakes a line that long.

Then, this week DeepSeek waded in deep again. The benchmark OpenDesign Arena tested 13 AI models on actual design work. DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash scored 81.2 out of 100, a whisker behind Astra's 82.7, while charging $0.023 per finished task against Astra's $1.61. That works out to 98% of the quality for about 1.4% of the price. Of the 13 models tested, 11 scored lower than DeepSeek and cost more to run.

In phones and AI models, the U.S. ships the most polished version of a category and charges accordingly. China ships something close enough and lets the price do the arguing. Neither Huawei nor DeepSeek claims to be best in class. They just have to be good enough that the savings close the deal.

What This All Means 

A moat built from spending more and building bigger is one a sanctioned, cost-disciplined rival can still climb. The moats that hold are the sticky ones: ecosystems, distribution, switching costs. Apple's grip on its users may carry the Duo even if the spec sheet loses, and OpenAI's Astra demand surge buys real time. But "we spent the most" no longer wins the argument by itself.

Jefferies analyst Edison Lee flagged the sharper risk: his supply chain checks suggest Apple's second-generation foldable, likely a more normal size, could land next year at an even higher price, making the Duo a possible one off and giving buyers a reason to wait. AT&T CEO John Stankey was blunter from the Goldman Sachs conference, noting good foldables have lived in Android for years and tend to serve a niche, not the mass market. The question is who can defend a premium when good enough keeps getting cheaper.
