Healthcare AI Operating Systems are Transforming Medicine

Clinicians are under greater pressure than ever to deliver high quality outcomes and it’s leading to burnout across the primary care world. San Francisco startup Ambience Healthcare aims to build the first true operating system for healthcare driven by GenAI.

The workflow automations that are providing the most lift to providers include:

• Intelligent documentation generation across medical specialties

• Early condition detection prompted by risk models

• Automated coding/billing compliance checks

• Referral automations amongst providers

• Proactive visit planning with agenda suggestions

• Personalized patient education materials

Ambience’s platform integrates with a plethora of EHR systems to streamline documentation and admin workflows, cutting time spent by ~80%. Their recent Series B round was majority follow-on funding co-led by Kleiner Perkins and the OpenAI Startup Fund, with support from a16z and Optum Ventures as well as hospital partners like Houston’s Memorial Hermann.

In another medical AI first, Cedars-Sinai is integrating BehaVR's AI-powered therapeutic application with Apple's Vision Pro headset to enhance its virtual reality offerings for patient treatment. CenteredVR aims to calm patients to manage stress and anxiety. It combines immersive VR experiences with therapeutic content, tailored by AI to individual patient needs.

Adoption of AI in medicine has many hurdles, however Biotech startups have had a strong start to the year with the most IPOs since 2021 according to Bloomberg. Three IPOs were already completed in Jan and two more are coming in days with the Kyverna Therapeutics and Metagenomi IPOs and these are primarily driven by AI and deeptech integrations to support patients.

AI Workplace Learning - Colyssan raised $22M from Lakestar (Revolut and Spotify backer) for its text-to-video platform for employee training.

AR Glasses - Brilliant Labs’ new “Frame” AR glasses with a multimodal AI assistant are backed by the CEO of Pokémon GO’s parent and partnered with Perplexity AI and Stability AI.

OpenAI Startup Fund - Secured $10M through an SPV to back AI startups, per Business Insider.
