AI and Web3… Meet Smartphones
If 2023 was the year GenAI exploded into mainstream awareness, 2024 could be the year it becomes part of our lives, via that most ubiquitous device, the phone. Samsung’s latest flagship Galaxy S24 Android phones feature “Galaxy AI” tools like instant phone call translation, new Google search, and advanced image and video-editing features. Having just lost the top phone seller spot to Apple, Samsung seems to be betting on AI to help them make up ground. Of note also that Google and Samsung appear to becoming even closer collaborators thanks to Google’s investment in its multimodular Gemini Nano AI model that runs natively on devices. This makes some sense since Samsung sells far more Android phones than Google. The Pixel 8 Pro also featured AI tools late last year, but the features on offer were less exciting than those Samsung just revealed.
The iPhone 16 is due in September, giving the Android field a window to make the most of this lead before we see what Apple’s “millions of dollars a day” spend on AI yields. We got hints when Apple claimed their Ajax-GPT model outdoes ChatGPT-3.5, or when it published a ML framework to build models that run well on Apple, or news it is working to optimize the ability to run LLMs on phones. We also got news of plans for an improved Siri with AI-focused features.
While it’s not a phone itself, the Rabbit R1 was CES 2024’s surprise hit, the gadget connects to your phone’s apps and accounts and you verbally give it tasks to complete. Rabbit may well be obsolete once the phones can do this themselves, but it hints at how popular an AI agent for smartphones will be. Rabbit also just partnered with Google challenger Perplexity AI.
In other mobile news, Vodafone just inked a $1.5B deal with Microsoft to enhance its services with genAI, cloud, and IoT technologies, showing how the worlds of AI, industry and mobile tech are further blurring together. Finally, this week Solana Mobile saw 30,000 preorders in the first 30 hours for its second-gen phone, “Chapter 2”. This Web3-ready phone will likely soon incorporate AI features as there is significant interest in AI amongst Solana founders and a lot of AI activity on the blockchain already.
